Chapter Summary
Part III 1950-1980
In this part there are certain things that are interesting to me and I would like to go over a few of them. One is about the segregation part of this time period. It was the biggest thing going on at this time. Nobody was comfortable with putting a colored student in a classroom with another race. I still cannot wrap my head around that to this day. Everything was different for white and African American people. There were different water fountains, bathrooms, schools, buses and seats on the buses. I think that it is just messed up. Everyone is equal and everyone deserves the same opportunity as the other person. At the end of the day they are human and did not pick what they are or what they look like. Just because they look different then others doesn't mean they are separate from others. As mentioned in the book African American students were segregated by law in 17 states. The fight for equality was happening, but at the same time it wasn't good enough or fast enough because students were still being mistreated and not getting an education with other students as they should of been getting this while time. Then when schools desegregated students were picked on for the way they looked and were not making friends because they looked different. There was a picture on page 143 that showed an African American girl looking back at another white student. The white girl looked stunned and was looking curious at the other girl. You can see that she was a little uncomfortable because it was something different to her and she doesn't know how to respond to that. This is something that should of never even happened in the first place. The girl is still someone that is just like her. Then there is a picture on page 145 that shows a little African American girl getting off the bus and there is a military guy I believe standing there with a gun. To me I think this is to protect her, but I am not entirely sure. This could be to make sure that she is safe and that nobody is going to attack her because she is another race. This just goes to show that it was crazy back then with segregation and that it even went to the extreme with national guards having to standby when kids were getting on and off the buses because people were crazy enough to harass others because of that person being different than what they are used to and what their kids are used to. Overall I think that this section was really good at explaining what was going on and how things were handled. I learned more about how things were dealt with and how the classrooms were discriminated and what they did to try and overturn this problem. Segregation is a serious topic and in my opinion is something that should of never been a thing to begin with.

Tyler,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your overview on the issue of segregation and civil rights and your own personal commentary and reactions to this dark side of our American history ...and even still in some ways into the present day.
