Part 2 1900-1950
Tyler Lovallo
In part 2 there were certain things mentioned that really caught my attention. One of them is about a quote that spoke to me and it was "education will solve every problem of our national life, even that of assimilating our foreign element" on page 145, 3rd paragraph. This was very interesting to me because I always thought that education is one of the most important things in life. It is a good thing to have because then you can learn about many things around you and about the real world so that way when you grow up you won't be lost. Education is important because it helps you understand the basics of life each year you take it. For example, when you first go to school you learn about how to read and write. This is something that you do every day without even realizing it. Then as you get older you will learn more about the history of the world and what went on before you were born and about things thousands of years ago. With that is where holidays come in and you get to know about each one and understand why they are a thing and what happened soon those days like independence day or Martin Luther King Day. Things like this are just important to know because it is about our history and it makes everything connect in a way. In my opinion education is just something that helps people get an understanding of literally anything around the world and without it I feel like we would be lost and not know what to do because it helps us gets jobs and helped us understand how to live.
Another quote that stood out to me was something that a teacher mentioned in this part. It was about how the progress of school was going. They said "At first it was a little frightening because I had never been in a school where you moved from class to class at the end of each hour."This was on page 86 in the first paragraph. I thought this was interesting because back then around this time period they would always be jammed up in one classroom and just learn about all of the subjects. Nowadays after each class you go to another one for the other subject. I thought this was interesting because you can see how it has grown over the years and that everything has changed and to see how it started and how awkward it was for everyone at first is interesting. Now we don't even think about it because it is so regular to us. For example, in middle school and high school and some elementary schools they just have a system where after the one class the school bell will ring and then you move on to another class for a different subject. Overall I think that this was a good part in the book to see some growth and how it compares to today.

Tyler,
ReplyDeleteWhat good quotes you chose from the text. In the first one, I would have liked to read from you about the challenge of having such a diverse immigration in a short time, and some of the debates and strategies developed to address this challenge (from the text). Your observations about the central role of education are appreciated.
In the second quote, I believe it is referring to the Gary Indiana school, and its rather novel hands-on and experiential approach, built on the educational theory of John Dewey (could you have written a bit about this?). Your observation of the change from one classroom for all subjects to students moving from class to class is a good one. Your photo adds to your blog.
