Part 1 Classwork
Tyler Lovallo
One thing that I will be talking about is a sentence from Part 1 that I found interesting. It is "To the extent that education involved schooling, parents were responsible for it." This was on page 12 and in paragraph 2. I liked this sentence because it talks about how back then the parents weren't forcing school on their kids because it wasn't a priority to them. Also, that it wasn't really as big as it is now. I find this crazy because now mostly all parents want their kids to go to school and have a great education. Also, now if you don't have your kids in some sort of school you can get in trouble as well. Another thing I would like to talk about is a word that was used. It was Media and it was found on page 2 paragraph 5. I thought this was interesting because the media from now is way different then media from back then. Now it is the source to everything and it is everywhere you go and look. Social media has a huge impact nowadays and is controlling the world with everything that goes on. It is a great news source because you can find out about anything that is going on around the world at any moment. Back then there was really no source of news other than just finding out about something by yourself or witnessing it. One last thing I would like to talk about in this part was a quote which was the "Public Culture" on page2, 3rd paragraph. I find this interesting because I thought how everything is just public nowadays. Everything is open to the public with everything with music, sports, politics. Now you can't really hide anything including what you do online. Back then the public was a hard thing to even accomplish. Back then it was hard to figure out what was going on if nobody told you. This part was really interesting to me and seeing these things caught my eye and made me think of how it is today compared to back then.
Tyler,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for pointing to some specific words and concepts discussed in Part I about the formation of schools in the US from 1790-1900. I love your focus upon parental responsibility and some differences between then and now re: education. Your choice of the word and concept of media is also a wonderful one to show vast difference. The only thing I would add is that there were many forms of print media in that period, especially in urban areas. Your selection of the term and concept "public culture" and your commentary was also fascinating. I would add that perhaps much about public culture from 1790-1900 was shaped by religion and shared religious services and views-- would you agree or not?
Thanks for your interesting commentary!
